The Benefits of Intuitive Eating: Holiday Edition

It's officially December, and you know what that means...the holiday season is upon us. Many of my clients report that the holidays are incredibly stressful. There are places to go, people to see, presents to buy, etc. BUT one thing they no longer stress about is food. If you have been dieting for a long time, Intuitive Eating, or making food choices based on how your body feels before, during, and after eating, may feel very foreign to you. It may actually feel impossible. However, for most of my clients, the benefits they see when they start listening to their bodies are immense. As the holidays approach, I wanted to give you a little taste of what my clients have experienced as Intuitive Eaters during the Holidays.

1. I Actually Enjoy Christmas Dinner!

“Every year I would barely eat before Christmas dinner to “save up” my calories. I would be so hungry that by the time dinner rolled around I would eat so fast that I barely tasted my food. Now that I’ve learned how to nourish myself and listen to my body, I can actually take my time and enjoy Christmas dinner.”


2. The Holidays Are Less Stressful

“Before I always felt like I had to work off holiday eating through exercise. The holidays are already busy and this was one more thing to fit in. Now I move when I want to. Sometimes I move as a way to destress but never because I feel like I need to earn my food.”


3. I Can Enjoy My Holiday Traditions

“As a family we would make holiday cookies each year. While I loved them, I would always feel so much guilt about eating additional sweets that it would ruin the experience. Now I can enjoy them without guilt and shame. They’re just another part of what makes the holidays fun.”
